Where to See Christmas Lights
First and foremost, there’s no better way to immerse yourself in the Christmas spirit than by having a walk through the different areas decorated with magical lights. Here are some of our favorite spots:
1. Philipsburg
The capital of the Dutch side comes alive with Christmas cheer every December. As you enjoy a walk down Front Street, you’ll find shops adorned with twinkling lights, festive decorations and holiday music filling the air. Don’t miss the Christmas tree in the main square, perfect for a cool holiday selfie. In our opinion, evening is the best time to visit, since the lights create a warm glow against the backdrop of Great Bay. If you want to enjoy it at its fullest, then don’t miss the annual tree lighting in the beginning of December.
2. The Christmas House at Cripple Gate
One of the most iconic Christmas attractions on the island is the Christmas House located at Cripple Gate. Each year, this local family transforms their charming home into a winter wonderland. Dazzling lights, themed decorations from all over the world, and, of course, a visit from Santa Claus himself. Families love to come here to take photos, enjoy holiday treats and soak in the festive atmosphere. It’s a must-visit for children and anyone who’s young at heart. If you’re lucky enough, you’ll also meet the house owner and have a nice conversation about her passion for the Christmas season.
3. The Christmas tree at Morne Valois
Located on the French side, and not too far from Cripple Gate, the neighborhood of Morne Valois has one of the nicest Christmas trees on the island. Illuminated with colorful lights and topped with a glowing star, this tree is located right in front of the Luxe restaurant. It’s the perfect excuse to stop and contemplate the city of Marigot illuminated under the night sky.
4. Christmas lights in Marigot
The capital of the French side offers a more subtle but equally enchanting holiday display. The streets are decorated with elegant lights, but the cherry on the cake is the front de mer. The waterfront offers the perfect place to have a walk this festive season. Here you’ll find the famous pelican, as well as a huge Christmas tree open on the inside. Make sure to pass through and even have a seat inside! Around the area you will see more Christmas decoration such as by the Tourism Office or the lolos (local restaurants). Explore the area at your pace and finish off at one of the surrounding restaurants for a perfect evening.
5. Other cool spots
While Philipsburg, Cripple Gate and Marigot steal the show, other smaller neighborhoods and communities also celebrate Christmas with their unique displays. For example, French Quartier features beautifully decorated streets, while Grand Case combines its culinary charm with subtle but elegant lights.
Events to Get You in the Holiday Spirit
1. Christmas Parade and Village in Philipsburg
Throughout December, Philipsburg’s boardwalk hosts a Christmas Village, complete with festive stalls, live music and family-friendly activities. The village also hosts a tree-lighting ceremony early in the month, signaling the official start of the season. Check the St. Maarten Boardwalk site for more info, you won’t want to miss it!
2. Village de Noël in the French Side
Marigot’s Christmas Market is a highlight for those who love artisanal goods and gourmet foods. Held in mid-December, the market features stalls selling handcrafted jewelry, traditional décor and seasonal delicacies. There’s also a children parade “Oualichi Christmas Parade” who will walk through the streets of Marigot. It’s an excellent opportunity to meet local artisans and learn about French Caribbean holiday traditions.
3. Serenades & Chanté Nwel
The Christmas serenades are organized on two areas: on one side, Orient Bay & Grand Case; and on the other, Nettle Bay & Marigot. It’s the perfect occasion to hear traditional Christmas songs! We invite you to check the updated information on the Collectivité de Saint-Martin website.
Chanté Nwel is a West Indian tradition taking place during the Christmas season. Families and friends gather together to sing Christmas songs.
4. Food & Drinks contests
If you’re one of those people who love tasting local specialties, then this contest is for you. Coconut tart, potato pudding and guavaberry punch will be the stars of the show. Organized at the hall of the Collectivité .
5. Beachside Christmas parties
Of course, it wouldn’t be Saint-Martin without a beachside celebration! Many beachfront bars and restaurants host Christmas parties with live music and menus inspired by the season. For a unique experience, consider dining at Grand Case or dancing at one of the clubs at Simpson Bay.
Festive Food and Drinks to Try
No Christmas celebration is complete without indulging in festive treats. Saint-Martin offers a fusion of flavors that reflect its diverse heritage. Here are a few must-tries:
• Coconut tart: A sweet and flaky pastry filled with coconut, enjoyed throughout the season.
• Sweet potato pudding: A beloved dessert that holds a special place in the hearts of the Saint-martinois.
• Guavaberry punch: A holiday staple, this drink is made from the red fruit of Guavaberry trees. It has a softly sweet taste with a little spicy note.
• Black cake: A rich, rum-soaked fruitcake that’s a beloved Christmas dessert.
• Creole Christmas ham: A savory centerpiece of many holiday feasts, often glazed with local spices and served with traditional sides.
Practical Tips to enjoy Christmas in Saint-Martin
1. Book early: December is a busy time on the island, so make reservations for accommodations, tours and popular restaurants well in advance.
2. Check event schedules: While most events have set dates, it’s always good to confirm closer to your visit, as schedules can be modified. Last-minute changes are usually announced on Instagram.
3. Explore local traditions: Immerse yourself in the island’s unique holiday culture by tasting a new dish or joining a community event.
4. Dress comfortably: Saint-Martin’s weather is warm all year-round, so lightweight clothing and comfy shoes will be best during daytime. However, during this time of the year it can chillier in the evening, so we recommend bringing a thin jacket or hoodie.
